Children's Time October 31

This October 31 the children had a wonderful time doing crafts in the church, under the watchful eye of our Sunday School teacher, Zane.  They entered the church for a time of instruction with Fr. Lawrence (shown here), staying afterward  for  the usual Daily Vespers.  Candy was distributed in the church hall when the service was over.  There was a good attendance of children, despite the inclement weather.

Wednesday October 31

This Wednesday October 31, children are welcome to come early to church at 6.15 p.m. in costume for a brief time in the church hall with our Sunday School leader.  There will be time a craft before Vespers, which will be served in the Church at the normal time of 7.00 p.m.
Immediately before Vespers, Fr. Lawrence will explain the icon of the feast of the day November 1, that of Sts. Cosmas and Damian, Holy Unmercenary Physicians.  He will also explain the icon of All Saints, which feast is served in the Orthodox Church on the Sunday following Pentecost, and in the western church October 31.  After the service, the Sunday School leader will provide the children present with candy, in honour of Sts. Cosmas and Damian, and of all the saints.

St. Mary Magdalene's Day

Today we are blessed to have the holy relics of St. Mary Magdalene, Equal-to-the-Apostles among us for veneration on this her feast-day.  Also, it being the Sunday after the feast of St. Elijah, we will have our annual blessing of vehicles at the end of the service.

Feast of St. Peter and Paul

This Thursday June 28, the Apostles' Fast comes to a conclusion as we serve a Vesperal Liturgy at 7.00 pm to commemorate the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul.  Fr. Richard will preach.  A festal meal will follow.  Sts. Peter and Paul, so different in personality and varied in their evangelistic approach, are portrayed in the icon of the feast as united in their common love for the Church, which they uphold together in their hands.  Their common love for their Lord transfigured their hearts and helped them transcend all their differences.  Sts. Peter and Paul, pray to God for us!

Welcome!

WELCOME to the
 RENE FAMILY!

Fr. Richard, Jaime, Lily, Gabe and John

Arriving Thursday June 14th

As many of you know, Fr. Richard will be attached to St. Herman's as his 'home base'. He will not be assigned any particular duties at our parish, but will be free to visit other parishes and act as supply priest in the deanery. Like Fr. Justin Hewlett he will be working with the Traditional Learning Academy, and Mat. Jaime is helping get a local Orthodox Home Schooling co-operative going. We look forward to having them as part of our parish community.

This Thursday May 24 we will serve a Vesperal Liturgy for the Feast of the Ascension at 7.00 pm, with a festal meal following afterward in the Church Hall.  Ascension Day marks the leave-taking of the Paschal season, and a local return to the usual fasting.  A meditation by Fr. Lawrence on the Ascension of our Lord can be accessed on our OCA website here.

Icon Procession Sunday March 4

This Sunday we will have an icon procession during the Divine Liturgy.  Please feel free to bring an icon from home to carry reverently in the procession.  The first Sunday of Great Lent had traditionally commemorated the restoration of icons and the Triumph of Orthodoxy over the iconoclasts.  Read more about how to make our procession here at our Spruce Island blog for February 29.  (Addendum:  And see photos of our own St. Herman's procession that day here on our Spruce Island blog for Tues. March 6.  Thank you "Lil'M" for posting them!)

Forgiveness Sunday Vespers

Forgiveness Vespers will be held this Sun. Feb.26 after our coffee hour.  Plan on staying for this service so that we can begin Great Lent together as a community, humbling ourselves before the Lord and each other, and asking His blessing on our upcoming Fast.  Read more about the spirit and logistics of this service at our Spruce Island blog here.
